Training for Christian Counseling
Training for Counseling with the Temperament
Having a tested, proven method of getting started with a client replaces fear with faith. You will be equipped with a divinely inspired tool that provides powerful, deep insights into the mind, will, and emotions of those who will seek your counsel.
Discovering the nature of a person's foundation: their temperament, provides the counselor an understanding of how that person was designed and created by God. It is possible for the properly trained Christian Counselor to discern precisely what the Designer had in mind when he created each of us before the world had its way with us.
Understanding Temperament And The APS
- Understanding
The entire purpose of counseling is to improve relationships. Human beings are social beings. The whole meaning of our existence is wrapped up in our relationships to others and to God. Understanding the nature of the relationship needs of those who seek your counsel is essential to the process of healing. - Before We Are Born (Jeremiah 1:5) (Psalm
139)
The nature of how we relate to one another is built in by our Creator before we are born. A profile of our relationship needs and desires as defined in the mind, will and emotion is known as our temperament.
The fact that our temperament comes as standard equipment at birth has been verified by countless scientific experiments and confirmed by multitudes of parents. Humans come pre-designed with needs, wants and desires at a very basic level. The "blank slate" idea has been thoroughly disproven. We know from scripture that God himself has knit us together. However, God has also equipped us with a "free will" that gives us the ability to live by our decisions rather than our nature.
- Measuring The Temperament
At a fundamental level our relationship needs are quantifiable. The three areas of relationship needs that have been identified are:
- Inclusion - Our need to have social
relationships: friends and co-workers and our willingness to
participate in this type of relationship. The mind.
- Control - The need to influence others, and
our willingness to have others influence or control us. The
will.
- Affection - The need to have close personal
relationships and our willingness to provide this kind of
relationship to others. The emotions.
- Inclusion - Our need to have social
relationships: friends and co-workers and our willingness to
participate in this type of relationship. The mind.
- APS (Formerly Known As Temperament
Analysis Profile)
The Arno Profile System (APS) was develop specifically for Christian Counselors. This accurate, simple yet highly effective tool empowers the counselor to gather useful information about the inborn temperament of the client. This tool identifies relationship needs and the extent that those needs are being met. Areas where needs are not being met can identified and addressed. Helping the subject in having their needs met produces gratifying results. The APS enables the counselor to identify the areas the subject is experiencing lack and create a treatment plan.
- You Will Know What Your Subject Needs
The APS provides the counselor with concrete information provided by their subject that reveals the areas of their relationships with others that are out of balance. The report even produces this information in graphic format as well as in text.

- Interpretation - Strengths and Weaknesses
The APS enables you to measure and understand the nature of a person's temperament. Both strengths and weaknesses will be revealed. Areas of weakness typically provide the best opportunities for healing. Scripture says that out of our weaknesses we are made strong (Hebrews 11:34). As a counselor, you facilitate these awesome changes.
- Imagine
As a counselor trained to gather information and understand the temperament, you will have accurate, useful insight into the driving forces behind those you will be helping. When a new person seeks out your counsel, you will be able to swiftly and correctly assess their temperament. This vital information will lead to creation of an effective treatment plan. Bypassing weeks or months of informal needs assessment, the methods offered by the Pastoral Counseling Center and the NCCA will streamline your practice and empower you to quickly understand and really help those who seek your counsel.
Testimonials
- Owners Manual: When I was
first presented with the idea of taking a Temperament Profile, I
resisted. However, to keep the peace, I agreed. As I answered the
questions I thought, "This is not going to work..." But was I in for
a surprise. Years ago, it took a week to process this analysis. We
waited. It was worth the wait. What I read described me perfectly.
Characteristics that had caused me problems my entire life were
revealed and reframed in a way that helped me to accept myself as I
am and deal constructively with the nature that was given to me by
God. Essentially I was provided with an "owners manual" for my soul.

- I have spent the past 35 years administering
all types of psychological tests, personality tests, cognitive
tests, etc. (there are not many tools out in the marketplace that I
have not used) and I must say I don’t know of another tool that is
as revealing and useful as the APS for helping people with problems
and challenges..
